VGP – Viet Nam has run up a trade deficit of US$1.2 billion in February following a large surplus in January.

The country gained an export turnover of US$ 9.6 billion and import value at US$10.8 billion in the second month of 2014.

According to some experts, as businesses focused on production to meet export orders before the lunar New Year, the figure fell in late January.

They also forecast that when domestic enterprises resumed production in February, material import demands would surge in the coming time.

Clothing, iron and steel, electronics, computers and components, and garment and footwear accessories were among the list of high import demands.

On the other hand, mobile phone handsets and accessories topped the list of export items with US$1.6 billion of revenue, closely followed by garments (US$1.3 billion).

In spite of the high deficit in February, the national economy has still maintained a trade surplus of US$244 million in the past two months.

Meanwhile, the foreign direct investment (FDI) sector enjoyed a trade surplus of nearly US$2.1 billion, while the domestic economic sector showed a deficit of nearly US$1.9 billion./.
