In celebration of the World Wildlife Day on March 3, 2014 for the first time, the CITES Management Authority of Vietnam on behalf of Vietnamese government exercised the rights and responsibilities of a member of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) together with many international conservation organizations such as World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the wildlife trade monitoring network (TRAFFIC), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). At the event, the organizations agreed to cooperate to prevent smuggling of wildlife across Vietnam’s border.

In addition, the organizations assist Vietnam to implement London Declaration on Illegal Wildlife Trade and Directive No. 03/CT-TTg issued by Prime Minister on prioritizing enforcement at all levels and across ministries to preserve precious, rare and endangered wild species of fauna and flora.

Conservation and animal protection organizations working in Vietnam together with other international non-governmental organizations have called on people in Vietnam to say no to illegal wildlife products, support efforts to combat, prevent illegal wildlife trade, in parallel with implementing raising awareness activities and supporting the implementation of the Directive.

On 20 December, the UN General Assembly at its 68th meeting proclaimed 3 March as World Wildlife Day. This day has given the world better understanding of the importance of wildlife to human in terms of ecological, genetic, economic, social, scientific, educational, cultural, entertainment and aesthetic value.
