Earth Hour is a global campaign initiated by WWF to raise public awareness on power saving to protect the environment from climate change. The initiative calls on individuals and organizations around the world to switch off their non-essential electric lights and devices for one hour on the last Saturday of March every year.

It was first carried out in the Australian city of Sydney in 2007 with the participation of over 2.2 million people. The campaign came to Vietnam in 2009.

This is the sixth year Vietnam has taken part in the environmental protection drive with a message that reads: “Let’s act to make the earth greener”.

The campaign is expected to continue all year round with hopes of ensuring sustainable socio-economic development and environmental protection, and mitigate the impact of climate change in Vietnam and elsewhere in the world.

Activities in response to Earth Hour 2014

Hoi An City held a number of activities in response to Earth Hour 2014 such as an exhibition to feature a variety of oil-fueled lamps, streets for pedestrians and non-motored vehicles, 1000 lanterns on Hoai River, art performances and folk games.

There were 7,000 students joining the Earth Hour 2014 program at HCMC’s Youth Cultural House. A lot of volunteers from dusk to dawn worked really hard at the city’s intersections to call for public awareness on environmental protection. In addition, many hotels in HCMC switched off their non-essential lights, used candles instead and served environmentally-friendly dishes to customers.
