A section of Vam Co Dong River in Tay Ninh Province where a boat capsized, killing four people Sunday
Rescuers have recovered the bodies of three men and a woman who drowned after a boat capsized on a river in the southeastern province of Tay Ninh on Sunday.
By 9 a.m, Monday, rescuers had recovered the last of the four bodies following a 20-hour search.
At around 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, three 28-year-old men — Tran Quoc Dien, Nguyen Van Phuong and Tran Thanh Phuong – and a 26-year-old woman – Tran Thi Thu Ha — hired Nguyen Hai Quang, 25, to take them across the Vam Co Dong River in Chau Thanh District on his motorized boat.
After traveling roughly five meters from the bank of the river, it capsized.
Phuong, the only one who could swim, managed to get ashore.
The other four were swept away in the current.
Local police and rescuers arrived at the scene after being informed of the accident, but the search for the victims proved difficult as hyacinth flowers blanketed the surface of the water.
At around 11 p.m. Sunday, rescuers discovered the bodies of the three men.
The woman’s body was recovered Monday morning, some 15 meters below the surface, and 30 meters away from where the boat capsized.
Investigators believe the four passengers began teasing one another, rocking and eventually capsizing the vessel.
