The department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) reported the existing 13 outbreaks in the five provinces of Khanh Hoa, Vinh Long, Ha Giang, Binh Thuan and Ben Tre. In addition, the outbreaks infected nearly 15,000 poultry.

The Steering Committee noted that the majority of outbreaks mainly came from the southern region. This year, the number of infected, dead and destroyed poultry in the region accounted for 70 per cent the national total.

Dam Xuan Thanh, Deputy Head of the department, said they are in the process of implementing a program, funded by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to inspect H7N9 viruses and increase the ability for regional veterinary agencies to test for the virus.

According to Mr. Thanh, because there is a high risk in the spread of the outbreaks, it is necessary to make prompt decisions on improving environmental sanitation and outbreak detection.

Information from the Ministry of Health revealed that Vietnam had not uncovered any cases of flu H7N9 in humans./.
