A July 1 deadline for overseas Vietnamese to register to keep their Vietnamese citizenship may be pushed back for another five years, pending legislative approval next month.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the Justice Ministry’s proposed amendment to the Nationality Law and asked that the draft amendment be submitted to the National Assembly — Vietnam’s legislature, according to a notice published on the government’s website Monday.

The 2009 law required overseas Vietnamese, or Viet Kieu, who hadn’t lost their Vietnamese citizenship by July 1, 2009, to register by July 1 of this year to retain it.

But only 6,000 out of 4.5 million overseas Vietnamese have registered so far, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dung also asked that the procedures for retaining citizenship be simplified and that the proposed amendment be filed into the agenda of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee.
