HA NOI (VNS) — A group of 70 overseas Vietnamese will return to Viet Nam to commemorate the Hung Kings on March 10 of the Lunar Year (April 9).

The yearly event is organised by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pay tribute to the nation’s legendary founders.

Deputy Minister and head of the committee Nguyen Thanh Son said yesterday that the activity demonstrated a Vietnamese tradition of paying gratitude to ancestors and affirmed that overseas Vietnamese were an important part of Viet Nam and its development.

The group included business people who had either never been to Viet Nam, had visited a few times or ran business affairs in the country, said Son. They wanted to see Viet Nam in real life and see the changes the country is going through, he said.

In addition to offering incense in Hung Kings’ Festival, the overseas Vietnamese will also visit the house of President Ho Chi Minh in central Nghe An Province, General Vo Nguyen Giap’s grave and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park – a world heritage site in central Quang Binh Province.

They will also travel to the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago, where they will set foot on the islands and attend a ceremony praying for the souls of soldiers who died to protect Viet Nam’s sovereignty and all those who had died at sea.

The activity is expected to inspire a sense of patriotism among overseas Vietnamese to the homeland and its seas,” Son said, noting that the visit to Truong Sa was the third of its kind for overseas Vietnamese since 2012.

The overseas Vietnamese will kick off their tour next week, which will end on April 28.

At present, there are around 4.5 million Vietnamese living in 103 countries and territories worldwide. — VNS
