HA NOI (VNS) — The Vietnamese Embassy in Pakistan is working with competent agencies in the host country to complete consular procedures and bring home a Vietnamese citizen detained for illegal entry, a senior official said yesterday.

At a regular press briefing in Ha Noi, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Hai Binh said that on December 31, 2013, the Vietnamese Embassy in Pakistan informed the ministry’s Consular Department about the arrest of 36-year-old Vu Gia Po.

Po is member of the H’Mong ethnic minority from Lung Lau Village in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang .

Po was detained for illegally entering Pakistan in October 2013 and taken to the Athmuqam police station in Muzaffarabad District (Kashmir region controlled by Pakistan), the embassy said, citing information provided by local police.

On receiving the news, the Consular Department co-ordinated with authorised agencies and localities to verify Po’s records and instructed the embassy to take measures to support him, Binh said.

On March 21, 2014, the embassy said it had consular contact with Po at the Zila Nellum police station. The man said he was in good health and stable spirits, and expressed his hope that he would be able to return to Viet Nam soon and be reunited with his family.

No dumping

Binh also said at yesterday’s press briefing that Viet Nam has many times affirmed that its businesses do not dump tra and basa fish as well as other seafood products in the US market.

He was responding to reporters’ questions on Viet Nam’s response to a recent announcement by the US Department of Commerce (DOC) of its final decision on the results of its ninth administrative review (POR9) of anti-dumping duties on tra fish fillets imported from Viet Nam.

“We think that issues in the two countries’ trade relations should be considered in a fair and objective manner in line with the spirit of trade liberalisation as well as developing bilateral economic and trade ties,” Binh said.

Under the DOC’s decision, announced on March 31, frozen tra fish fillets exported to the US will still be subject to anti-dumping taxes, although they are lower than those announced in the preliminary POR9 issued last September.

Accordingly, the anti-dumping duties on products of two companies, Vinh Hoan and Hung Vuong, will be US$0.03 USD per kilo and $1.2 per kilo respectively, and for other companies it is $0.42 per kilo. — VNS
