One Vietnamese worker dies Saturday after a scaffolding collapsed during preparation for an annual festival in Ha Long Town in the northern province of Quang Ninh, one of the country’s most popular attractions for visitors.

A hinge had come off the scaffolding when two workers were standing on it to build a stand for 10,000 seats, a Vietnam News Agency report said.

The two were taken out of the rubble and rushed to hospital but one of them died a few hours later. The other is recovering.

The identities of the workers were not released.

A source from local authorities government said local media and advertisement company Thanh Ha is tasked with building the stand.

The Carnaval Ha Long Festival, which entails stage and street performances by local and foreign artists, has been held annually over the past seven years to celebrate Vietnam’s Independence Day and the International Labor Day, which fall on April 30 and May 1 respectively.

Official figures showed that the festival has been bringing more tourists to Ha Long Bay, a world-renowned tourist staple and a UNESCO natural heritage.
