Ho Chi Minh City police and their colleagues in the southern city of Can Tho safely rescued a kidnapped 14-year old girl on Wednesday.

A gang had seized the girl the previous morning while she was on her way to school, authorities said.

One of the four kidnappers was the girl’s next-door neighbor.

Nguyen Han Duy’s uncle Nguyen Van Thanh was driving her to school by motorbike in Can Tho on Tuesday when a seven-passenger car suddenly pressed the two against the pavement.

Two men jumped out of the car, and attacked Thanh while another dragged his niece inside and drove quickly from the scene away.

One of the assailants took Thanh’s bike key so that he couldn’t follow them, Thanh told to local police.

Duy’s mother later received an anonymous phone call from a man, asking her to prepare a VND1 billion (US$47,500) ransom for the return of her daughter. The man warned her not to call the police or they would “cut her daughter’s head off”.

Local police later stopped the kidnappers’ car as it was crossing the Can Tho Bridge heading toward Ho Chi Minh City.

On Wednesday morning, a team of police officers swarmed a hotel in Binh Tan District and safely rescued Duy.

Police arrested three men and Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, a 20-year old girl who lived next door to Duy.

Upon hearing that her neighbor’s family had just sold a piece of land and had acquired a significant amount of money, Chi enlisted the other men in the kidnapping.
