Four men from the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho were cleared as suspects in a thievery case after remaining under investigation for 33 years.
During a press briefing held Thursday, police officially dropped their investigation of Pham Van Tam, 81, Tran Cong Thanh, 64, Ma Luong Tinh, 59, and Vo Thanh Long, who died at the age of 61.
A construction company that once employed the men as guards lost several rubber bands and refrigerators in July of 1981.
The four men were detained for nearly ten months on suspicion of having stolen state-owned assets.
They denied any wrongdoing and only admitted that their poor surveillance had given the thieves their chance.
Local police released them in April 1982 but remained suspects in the crime.
Thanh lodged a complaint over the wrongful detention to different agencies to no avail.
Captain Tran Van Tuan, a spokesperson of Can Tho police, said they dropped the case after the Ministry of Public Security early this year forced them to look into Thanh’s complaints.
They checked the case again and decided there was no evidence to continue it any further.
The case was tossed out on May 16.
Tuan said police would meet with Tam, Thanh, Tinh and the family of Long and will assess their demands for compensation based upon the law.
