A family in central Vietnam was digging a hole in their house to build a lavatory when they found a 1,000lb Vietnam War-era bomb on Wednesday.

Officers of the military command of Son Ha District, Quang Ngai Province, confirmed that the 1.45 meter long bomb was probably dropped by the US Air Force 50 years ago in air raids targeting a guerrilla base in the province.

Soldiers have been deployed to evacuate the family and protect the scene while waiting for local army engineers to clear the bomb.
