(VOV) – The Ministry of Transport (MoT) on June 8 inaugurated Vietnam’s longest prestressed concrete bridge linking Hanoi’s Son Tay town and Vinh Phuc province’s Vinh Tuong district.

Vinh Thinh bridge spanning the Red River was designed to connect Hanoi and north-western provinces of Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang, and ease traffic pressure on National Highways 2, 3, 6, 32 from Hanoi to southern provinces.

Construction of the 5.4km long bridge began in December 2011 and was completed seven months ahead of schedule.

The project has a total investment of US$137 million, including US$100 million sourced from the Republic of Korea’s official development assistance (ODA) channeled through the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of the RoK government.

The early inauguration of the bridge to replace its Vinh Thinh ferry will help facilitate traffic flows and boost socio-economic development in Hanoi and neighbouring provinces, said MoT Deputy Minister Nguyen Hong Truong.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung praised the MoT, Hanoi, contractors and builders for their effort to complete the project ahead of time.

He thanked the government and people of the RoK for providing ODA for this project, adding that the RoK is one of Vietnam’s leading trading partners and ODA donors.

Vietnam will continue to closely manage and effectively utilise Korean ODA, the PM said.

He also asked the MoT to speed up other bridge construction projects across the country to support local socio-economic development efforts.
