PANO – The Special Mission of Vietnamese and Lao Governments held talks on stepping up their joint work on finding and collecting sets of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died while serving international obligation in Laos.
At the talks in Can Tho city on June 25th, the two sides highly appreciated results of their cooperation in this field. Accordingly, in the 2013-2014 dry season, thanks to practical support of Lao authorities and people, Vietnamese search teams repatriated 220 sets of remains of Vietnamese martyrs. Among them, seven were identified.
Addressing the event, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Thanh Cung, Deputy Minister of National Defence cum Head of the Vietnamese Government’s Special Mission, valued the effective assistance and support from Laos in searching, collecting and bringing home Vietnamese martyrs’ sets of remains.
In the next dry season, eight search teams of Vietnam target to find and collect about 300 sets of remains of Vietnamese martyrs in Lao localities. To promote the work, the two sides should mobilize locals to provide martyrs’ information to their authorities and search teams to collect sets of remains of Vietnamese martyrs.
The two missions also agreed to beautify statues “Vietnam-Laos combat alliance solidarity” in Lao provinces of Attapu, Oudomxay and Xiangkhouang, as well as recommend their relevant agencies upgrade a statue of this kind in Paksong district, Champasak province.
On this occasion, the Vietnamese Government’s Special Mission handed over US$ 670,000 to its Lao counterpart to carry out cooperation activities in repatriating Vietnamese martyrs’ sets of remains, and the upgrading of the statue in Paksong district.
