Ho Chi Minh City police are filing murder and robbery charges against 20-year-old Tran Nhat Duy for killing and dismembering of his abusive gay partner on May 19, allegedly to end their relationship.
Duy’s girlfriend, 22-year-old Tran Gia Linh, also faces charges of aiding and abetting and receiving stolen property.
Police have yet to recover the hands of the victim, 30-year-old Van Anh Tuan.
Based on information provided by Duy, police have recovered Tuan’s head and legs in the Central Highlands town of Bao Loc and along the 667 mountain pass. Duy told the police he dumped Tuan’s hands near My Loi Ferry Station which runs between the Mekong Delta provinces of Long An and Tien Giang.
On May 23, Duy’s landlord Nguyen Ho Quoc Dung became suspicious of the intolerable odor emanating from his tenant’s room and called the police who searched the premisses and found Tuan’s torso.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Duy and Linh, both of whom confessed to their roles in the crime.
Police say Duy began a relationship with Tuan as an 11th grade student in Tien Giang — where Tuan, Duy and Linh all grew up.
Tuan often threatened Duy about engaging in love relationships with others and used to beat him, Duy told the police.
In October 2013, Tuan followed Duy to Ho Chi Minh City after the latter enrolled in a university, where Duy met and fell in love with his classmate Linh.
Duy confessed that he began purchasing potassium cyanide in mid-May and putting it in Tuan’s noodles but the poison only caused the man to throw up.
On the evening of May 19, Tuan allegedly added the same poison to Tuan’s water and the victim was dead within two hours.
A day later, Duy bought a hand saw, an electric saw, tape and bags and cut off his victim’s head and limbs.
Duy told Linh about the murder and his girlfriend came to his room to help clean up the evidence and spray air freshener to disperse any odors.
From May 21-23, Duy got rid of Tuan’s body parts by throwing them in the river near Tien Giang’s My Loi Ferry Station and hiding them in and around Lam Dong Province’s Bao Loc Town.
Linh helped Duy sell Tuan’s motorbike and cellphone for VND10 million.
In another case, a court in Dong Nai Province on January 15 sentenced two men to death for killing and dismembering their homosexual roommate, 28-year-old Bui Van Liem.
Ngo Van Tam, 21, and Tran Tu Dien, 25, confessed they killed Liem because the victim allegedly broke his promise to give them VND500 million (US$23,500) in return for them having sex with him.
