PANO – The branch of Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) in Phu Yen province will provide medium- and long-term loans for fishermen and businesses in the province to build and upgrade high-capacity fishing boats.

The loans come from the Government’s VND 3 trillion credit package in support of offshore fishermen in the province to raise their fishing quality.

BIDV Phu Yen’s Director Ha Quang Huy said that the money will be disbursed right after fishermen’s borrowing plans are approved by the provincial People’s Committee. According to the bank, 22 fishermen and businesses have registered for the loans.

At present, Phu Yen has 1,000 offshore fishing ships, including 585 ships fishing tuna in fishing grounds in Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagoes. Fishing ships are divided into groups to help each other, together protect the environment and national sovereignty over sea and islands, and deal with emerging problems at sea.

Over the last three years, Phu Yen fishermen annually catch about 47,000 tons of sea products, including around 6,000 tons of tuna.
