Two earthquakes recorded on Aug 24th, the strongest measuring over 5 in magnitude, have shaken Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano, causing the country to issue an increasing risk of an eruption may be imminent, according to AP. Iceland’s Meteorological Office confirmed that the earthquakes measured 5.3 and 5.1 on the Richter scale. Thousand of small earthquakes have rattled Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano over the last five days, prompting meteorologists to warn of an increasing risk of eruption and causing the public safety authorities to evacuate tourists from the popular summer climbing venue. Scientists have noticed an increase in seismic activity around the volcano, located in the northwestern region of Vatnajokull glacier, one of Europe’s largest glaciers, over the past seven years, the Meteorological Office said. A 2010 eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokul volcano caused a week of international aviation chaos, with more than 100,000 flights cancelled./. |
