Tri Thuc Tre, an online newspaper, was fined VND207 million (USD9,857) and suspended for three months for posting an article depicting women from the Southwest of Vietnam in a bad light.

The article, entitled “Women in Southwest and three famous characters” was a commentary in which the writer characterised women who live in the region as beautiful, obedient and unintelligent. The writer also used a colleague to exemplify the traits he attributed to females from the area.
The Ministry of Information and Communications held a meeting on August 14 to discuss how to deal with the situation.
According to the decision handed down by the ministry, Tri Thu Tre did in fact commit violations of press regulations.
