(VOV) -The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) have issued a stamp set “Vietnamese Primates” on the occasion of the 25th Congress of the International Primatological Society hosted by Vietnam.
The collection consists of three stamps and one souvenir sheet depicting some endangered primates.
Addressing the ceremony in Hanoi on August 11, Forest Use Department Director General Cao Chi Cong said that Vietnam is a country rich in biodiversity with a remarkable number of primate taxa.
According to the inventory data, 26 taxa of primate are identified in the country, four of them are endemic, five are listed in the “World’s 25 most endangered primates”. Most of them are threatened with extinction.
Despite a well organised system of protected areas across the country, conservation activities in Vietnam are still facing many challenges from loss and degradation of the forest, including illegal timber extraction, as well as illegal hunting and illicit wildlife trading.
Therefore, more strong commitments, efforts and investment into primate conservation in Vietnam are required from international community, non-government organizations (NGOs), and individuals including improved scientific capacity and law enforcement targeting both the hunting of primates and illegal harvesting forest resources.
