Two Vietnam Airlines pilots have had their licenses revoked for their involvement in a near-collision between Vietnam Airlines and VietJetAir.

The incident occurred on July 7, when a Vietnam Airlines craft came within 6.3 miles of another plane operated by VietJet Air near HCM City.

At 3:17pm on that day, the Vietnam Airlines flight was en route from Hanoi to Can Tho when air traffic controllers requested them to lower their altitude to 32,000 feet. The controller also informed crew that another aircraft was flying near them at 31,000 feet.

However, the Vietnam Airlines crew did not strictly comply with the request and the paths of the two planes crossed too closely. Although there was no collision, the airborne collision avoidance system was activated.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) called it a serious violation of flight procedures, and they decided to withdraw the licenses both the pilot and co-pilot of the Vietnam Airlines flight.

Dinh Viet Thang, deputy director of CAAV said, “The standard safe distance between two aircraft is a minimum of 10 miles, and any distance less than that presents a high risk of an accident.”

He added that recently several other such cases have been reported in Vietnam, involving flights by Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific Airlines.
