The Ebola outbreak has now killed more than 2,400 people and infected over 4,700 people, according to the new toll released by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The WHO chief Margaret Chan, said in the three hardest-hit countries, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the number is moving faster than the capacity to manage them.

Transmitted through bodily fluids, the Ebola virus can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, organ failure and internal and external bleeding.

Liberia has been hit hard by the Ebola epidemic with around 2,300 cases in total, and some of 1,200 have killed in the last three weeks.

Liberian officials describe the outbreak as the greatest threat to national stability since the civil war in 1989 – 2003, which killed nearly 250,000 people.

The US Government has committed around USD100 million to tackle the outbreak by providing protective equipment for health care workers, food, water, medical and hygiene equipment./.
