Son La is located in the centre of the northwest region and connects the region while serving as a gateway to Laos, thus the development of industry and trade in the province is particularly important. Son La’s trade and industry sector has demonstrated its role in the economic development of the province.

As reported by the Statistics Department of Son La province, in the first 6 months of 2014, the gross domestic product of the province (at constant price of 2010) is estimated to rise 8.93 percent over the first 6 months of 2013. Specifically, industry and construction increased by 11.14 percent; manufacturing and service sector increased by 11.24 percent; industry and construction area reached high rise, particularly, mining industry rose 14.06 times; processing industry 5.06 percent; production and distribution of electricity and gas 3.67 percent; water industry, management and treatment of waste disposal 4.05 percent; while the construction sector fell 2.63 percent. The service sector continued to contribute to the overall growth of the economy. In particular, the total added value of service group with nature of the market increased by 13.44 percent; professional services group 7.91 percent; and public administration group 9.21 percent. The total turnover of retail goods and social stipend service in February of 2014 is estimated at over VND1 billion, down 9.3 percent from the previous month and up 19.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

To achieve these results, the Department of Industry and Trade of Son La has been active in making plans to advise the Provincial Party Committee and the People’s Committee to develop industrial production and trade and industrial clusters, promote trade as prescribed, and boost coordination among management state agencies to synchronously and aggressively implement management solutions of goods and service market.

However, there have appeared difficulties in the industry and trade sector of Son La, which will cause significant impact if not removed promptly. Mr Nguyen Duy Nhuong, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Son La said that the difficulties in the industry and trade sector are not achieving export targets, inefficient industry investment, some lack of some processing industries, difficulties in producing a number of products, and low power use rate. In the meantime, Son La set high standards for industry and trade and further to become prosperous province in the North by 2015, which is creating significant pressure for the Industry and Trade sector of Son La.

According to Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang at a working visit to Son La, the development of industry and trade should be linked to promoting comprehensive relations with Laos, because this is not only an advantage but also the role of the local connection between the two countries. The province has a 250 km border with Laos, in which there are two border gates and seven open entries which will create business attraction, if border trade policies are made good use of.

Besides performing well its function and duties, the Department of Industry and Trade of Son La province in the future will continue proposing and advising the province solutions to remove difficulties and boost Industry and Trade development. Conditions for the Industry and Trade sector of Son La to develop rapidly are clear, yet particular steps and solutions remain important. The Department of Industry and Trade should strengthen information with other agencies of the ministry, thereby contributing positively to fulfilling the objectives of the province.
