The Australian Defense Minister David Johnston met his Japanese counterpart Akinori Eto, in Tokyo to discuss the submarine developing cooperation program. In his first bilateral meeting with the Japanese Defence Ministe in Tokyo, David Johnston formally requested Japanese cooperation in a deal. At the meeting, the Australian Defence Minister discussed defence and security tie-ups with Japan. Mr Johnston showed interest in Japan’s submarine technology. “So, we have many important and vital issues to discuss in terms of our cooperation going forward in challenging times”. Mr Eto said he wanted to deepen Australia’s special relationship with Japan and called on Senator Johnston for special support. So far, Japan – Australia security cooperation ranks only second in importance after the US. To strengthen cooperation, the Japanese side said it is important that Australia firm up its own defence policy which the Abbott administration is working on./. |
