On October 16, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly elected five new non-permanent members on the Security Council for two-year terms. Photo for illustration (Source: APF/VNA) The five new members, as non-permanent members include Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela. Following the first round of voting, the General Assembly elected Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Venezuel and Spain who was elected with 132 votes to Turkey’s 60, after a third round of balloting, following a close fight with Turkey to fill the remaining seat on the Council, open to the Western European and other states group. The new members term will begin from January 1, 2015 and cease on December 31, 2016. The UN has 193 member states and a two-thirds majority of 129 votes is needed to win a non-permanent seat in the council. The UN Security Council has five permanent and ten non-permanent members, which change after every two years. Every year, voting takes place in the General Assembly to replace five of these ten non-permanent members./. |
