Indian community in HCMC joins Diwali festival

Over 1,000 people in the Indian community in Ho Chi Minh City and their Western and Vietnamese friends on Saturday evening joined Diwali – the Festival of Lights symbolizing the victory of good over evil – at the White Palace Convention Center in Phu Nhuan District in Ho Chi Minh City.


The Indian festival, Diwali Gala 2014, is also considered as a time to spread the spirit of kindness and share the joy, and the time to shower with gifts and bring happiness to all people around.


The host for the event, which featured live performance by renowned Bollywood singer – Kumar Sanu, was the Indian Chamber of Business, better known as Incham, as usual.


Considered as one of the biggest Indian festivals, Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness over India for five days with the main celebrations held on the third day.


On the special day, there are firework shows and diyas ceremony, which people light up cotton string wicks inserted into small pots filled with oil. People also light up candles all around their houses as a symbol of victory of good over the evil.


The people also offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi — The Goddess of Wealth – and seek blessings from her, then wear new clothes and exchange gifts.
