Conservationists have successfully rescued a juvenile Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica) seized from illegal captivity in Binh Duong Province.
The one-year old pangolin weighing roughly 900 grams is being taken care of in quarantine cage of by the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program of Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center in Ninh Binh Province‘s Cuc Phuong Park.
After being quarantined, this pangolin will be carefully monitored for health and behavior in order to assess for releasing possibility, according to Save Vietnam’s Wildlife.
Luong Tat Hung, wildlife husbandry staff of the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program said the center received another pangolin on October 5 from Binh Dinh Province park rangers.
“This is the first time confiscated pangolins have been transferred to the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program since 2010. This is considered as positive signal for wildlife conservation in Vietnam,” he said.
“We will cooperate closely with rangers and expect that there will be more confiscated wild animals being transferred to rescue centers instead of selling back to the trade.”
According to Save Vietnam‘s Wildlife, Vietnam is an important country for biodiversity conservation and home to a wide variety of rare and endemic animals.
One of these, the Sunda Pangolin is arguably one of the most exploited animals worldwide, it said.
