On November 5th, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a situation report that included a decrease in the number of total death cases of Ebola. Figures from the United Nations Health Agency show that as of October 31st the toll of recorded infections stood at 13,042, not 13,567 with deaths standing at 4,818 and not 4,951. The latest outbreak of Ebola has hit Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone hardest, with the majority of deaths and cases arising from these three West African countries. WHO said 2,697 deaths were recorded in Liberia, out of a total of 6,525 cases. In Sierra Leone, 1,070 people had died from the virus out of 4,759 cases and in Guinea, 1,041 deaths have been recorded in a total of 1,731 infected cases. The outbreak appears to have been stopped in Nigeria and Senegal, with no new cases in Nigeria since September 8 and none in Senegal since its first and only case was reported on August 29. WHO has called for an end to flight cancellations and travel restrictions to the Ebola zone. It says these measures hamper international relief efforts and hurt the countries’ economies. On November 5, US President Obama asked Congress for USD6.2 billion in emergency funds to fight Ebola in West Africa and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has also called leaders of some countries and organizations to urge more support in the fight against the deadly Ebola, a spokesman said./. |
