Nhan Dan Online – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will continue to work with the Vietnamese Government to promote public-private partnership (PPP) projects, ADB President Takehiko Nakao has said.
Nakao made this comment during a press conference on September 19 as part of his two-day visit to Vietnam.
Earlier, he met Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, State Bank of Vietnam Nguyen Van Binh and Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh.
He also attended the 5th Asian Development Forum held in Hanoi, where he gave a keynote address outlining an 8-point agenda to sustain growth in Asia.
The ADB president said the bank had been supporting the Vietnamese Government to draft a decree on PPP, based on its experience in other countries.
He said drafting the decree was one thing, but what was really important was to implement it, a process that faced many challenges.
Nakao stated that the ADB wanted to work with the Vietnamese Government and had spent US$20 million to establish the Project Development Facility to find and develop good projects for PPP.
He advised the Government to keep the bidding process for TPP projects as open as possible, given the fact that the contracts tended to be awarded to certain companies, and stressed that PPP was not just financing but aimed to make projects more efficient.
The ADB is expected to provide Vietnam with a total of US$1.37 billion for 2014 and planned to offer another US$1.24 billion the following year to support sustainable growth.
