Health condition of pregnant women of mistaken injection stable

The Ministry of Health and its Department in the northern province of Bac Ninh yesterday held a press conference over mistaken vaccine injection for 31 pregnant women in Tu Son Town of the province.


Mr. Nguyen Tran Hien, director of the Hanoi-based Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology cum chairman of the Extended National Vaccination Program ( ENVP), confirmed that the incident took place in Bac Ninh on December 20 totally due to medical workers’ irresponsibility and neglecfulness, stressing that the Ministry will issue harsh penalties on those involved in the incident as it is unacceptable.


On mentioning the danger of DPT (also DTP and DTwP), a combined vaccines against three infectious diseases in humans including diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and tetanus on pregnant women, Dr. Hien said that the vaccine does not cause harm to these women as it is inactivated vaccine.


Dr. Tran Dac Phu, director of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health’s Preventive Medicine Department, said that right after being informed of the serious incident, the Ministry has set up a scientific council comprising of leading vaccine, pediatric and obsterics experts to assess the seriousness of the incident as well as collect opinion from experts of the World Health Organization.


The Ministry announced that the vaccine does not cause amy harm to pregnant women. Currently, they are all in good condition.


The incident took place in the local medical clinic in Tuong Giang Commune in Tu Son Town on December 20.


Eight days ago, at the medical clinic in Tuong Giang Commune, nurse Nguyen Quyet Thang, vice chief of the clinic mistakenly administered vaccine DPT to 31 local pregnant women.


During the procedure, nurse Thang did not detect the mistake until the end of the working day. The medical clinic leaders decided to report the incident to the Preventive Medicine Center.


Those involved in the incident were suspended from working.
