A traffic cop who allegedly crashed a BMW into a group of militiamen, killing two and injuring seven others in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, told police he had borrowed the car from a fellow cop.
On Monday, Senior-lieutenant Pham Hong Tuan, 28, was taken into police custody for investigations. He will be detained in four months, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.
Tuan was also suspended after causing the accident.
Tuan allegedly crashed the four-seater black BMW sedan into a group of 10 militiamen from Ngai Giao Town and Lang Lon Commune at 1 a.m. on Saturday when the militiamen were standing by the roadside in Ngai Giao during their joint-patrol.
The Hanoi-registered car was speeding at the time of the accident, and allowed the militiamen no time to escape being hit.
Militiaman Ho Xuan Thu, 55, died on the spot while Van Son Dong, 38, died on the way to hospital. Seven others were injured.
Two of the injured have been transferred from Ba Ria-Vung Tau to Ho Chi Minh City for better treatment.
The BMW and a number of motorbikes were badly damaged.
On Monday, Tuan told Ba Ria-Vung Tau police he came to HCMC on December 5 with his wife and their new-born baby for vaccination.

His wife and baby then got back to Ba Ria-Vung Tau, while Tuan dropped by Bien Hoa, the capital of HCMC’s neighboring Dong Nai Province, to get his luxury motorbike SH, which was being fixed in a local repair shop.
As his motorbike had not been fixed, Tuan came to a friend named D., an officer of Dong Nai Traffic Police Division, to borrow his friend’s BMW to drive back to Vung Tau, Tuan told the police.
According to police, the BMW that Tuan drove had the license number 29A-410.86. But according to the Vietnam Register, this license number was granted to a four-seater Toyota Camry owned by Tran Thi Lien, a woman in Hanoi.
The plate that the BMW was bearing, therefore, is fake, they said.
The Dong Nai Traffic Police Division refused to comment on the origin of the BMW, saying they need more time to investigate, according to Tuoi Tre.
