PANO – The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on February 12th, in preparation for the ADSOM plus (ADSOM+), the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and the ADMM Plus (ADMM+), which are scheduled to take place in Malaysia, the existing ASEAN Chairman.
The Vietnamese delegation was led by Major General Vu Tien Trong, Director of the Institute for Defence International Relations.
The meeting heard outcome of the meeting of ADSOM working group on January 22nd to 23rd in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
It was also informed about the process of the ASEAN defence ties in the use of military resources in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, the cooperation between defence forces and civil social organizations in non-traditional security, the network of ASEAN peacekeeping centres, the ASEAN defence industry cooperation, the ASEAN defence interaction program, the formation of the ASEAN logistic support framework, and the establishment of a direct communication link in the ADMM process.
At the meeting, the participants also heard reports of the 8th Conference of the Network of National Defence and Security Research Institutes, considered new initiatives in the ADMM and ADMM+ frameworks as Malaysia’s concept paper on ASEAN standby military group and Thailand’s concept paper on the establishment of an ASEAN military medical centre.
In preparation for the coming ADMM in Langkawi, Malaysia this March, the meeting considered and discussed agendas and other documents.
