A tour boat on an overnight cruise of Ha Long Bay caught fire, but swift action by crew and the calm response by passengers resulted in the safe evacuation of all on board.
Tourist boat on fire in Ha Long Bay
The boat, owned by Ha Long Bien Ngoc JSC, with a crew of seven, was carrying 16 passengers, a guide and a server at the time of the incident, at 8:30pm on February 3. as it lay at anchor in the world heritage listed tourist site in Quang Ninh Province.
Passengers and crew were transferred to nearby Titop Island, assisted by neighbouring boats. Attempts to contain the fire failed and the cruise boat was destroyed.
The three-star boat was designed to sleep 18 and had recently undergone routine maintenance and safety checks.
Chairman of Quang Ninh Province People’s Committee, Nguyen Van Doc, directed officials to provide all necessary support for the tourists and crew.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
