With a passion for scientific research, many pupils have had inventions with practical benefits.
The school-yard sweeper attracts the attention of many people
In the Hai Duong Provincial Scientific and Technical Research Contest for High School Pupils held by the provincial Department of Education and Training last January, the Organizing Board and those present were attracted by a machine named “School-yard sweeper”. This was an invention of Tran Minh Thuyet, a pupil of Pham Su Menh Junior High School (JHS) (Kinh Mon district).
The machine was made after she had seen a cleaner hard move each broom stroke to sweep the school-yard. The sweeper was designed to consist of two automatically-rotary brooms, one waste leading line, one trashcan, etc. The machine was attached to wheels and handles, helping the user quickly clean a large area with labor lifted but work efficiency improved.
To demonstrate that, instructor Nguyen Hop Cuong tried out the machine, which cleaned any floor section it went through. “Pupils proactively developed and realized their ideas. Teachers only offered directions and suggestions to perfect their topics,” shared teacher Cuong.
Also an invention for cleaning, but the “utility robot” of pupil Pham Le Viet Anh (Nguyen Trai Senior High School (SHS) for Gifted Pupils) was sophisticatedly designed with many scientific and technological applications.
Smaller and more compact, Viet Anh’s “utility robot” was used to clean the places where tools were hard to be put in to work. The robot-shaped machine was around 20cm high and wheeled. A processor was developed to help the robot find a way and see litter in shadows. Not only collecting litter, the utility robot was also equipped with an “absorber” of small metallic objects, such as nails, screws, needles, etc., to make the cleaning more thorough.
“The idea of an intelligent robot was conceived when I saw my mother strenuously clean after work. I wanted to make a robot to be able to help my mother with housework,” shared Viet Anh.
In addition to inventions in electrical engineering and mechanical fields, those in chemical and environmental fields also drew many people’s attention.
“Studying and manufacturing an environmentally-friendly composite material based on unsaturated polyester resin using cellulose fibers extracted from pulp” was the topic of a group of Hong Quang SHS pupils (Hai Duong city).
“My group wanted to look for a topic useful to life, especially the environment, because environmental pollution is currently at an alarming level and much concerned about. We learnt about studied topics in this field and found out that scientists were studying floral fibers to have another material more environmentally friendly, and there were various research topics on cellulose fibers derived from bamboo, nua (Neohouzeaua), coconut fibers, etc.,” said pupil Pham Quynh Mai, the team leader.
From there, Mai’s group started to learn about paper, a material derived from plants, which are mostly constituted by cellulose. Then, the group tried combining glass and cellulose fibers in an appropriate ratio to produce a synthetic material.
The processing of a PC material on the basis of unsaturated polyester resin and pulp brought about positive results and was completely possible to be applied in reality. All PC material samples containing microfibers had good durability. The production of the composite material with good longevity and durability both utilized paper sources, minimizing the amount of waste paper, and helped save costs, develop the domestic economy, and open up a new direction for the treatment of waste paper apart from recycling.
Among 49 inventions of 27 provincial schools, many were appreciated by the jury for product quality as well as the ability to apply in reality. For example, the “Versatile sowing-machine” of a group of Van Hoi JHS pupils (Ninh Giang district) had simple structure but could sow many kinds of seeds, helping save farmers’ labor.
The inventions: “Handily lifted and lowered board system” of a group of Thanh Nhan JHS pupils (Ninh Giang district), “Oc buou vang (Pomacea canaliculata) crushing machine” of Mac Thi Buoi JHS pupils (Nam Sach district), etc. were also appreciated with value in use in reality.
