Ms. Han Thu Ha, living in the U.S, confided, “From Phu Yen Newspaper online, I’ve read the column ‘Together relieving A/O pain’ about the desperate circumstance of the family of the elderly Tran Thi Guong (aged 90, living in Phong Nien village, Hoa Thang commune, Phu Hoa district), I feels so sorry for her. Despite being 90 years of age, everyday, she has to care her two daughters (Miss Nguyen Thi Ngan, Miss Nguyen Thi Nhung) with three meals by putting each spoon of porridge or rice. The two daugthers cannot move, just lying in bed; their faces are bewildered by sequelae of Agent Orange/ dioxin. A few years ago, from dawn every day, the old mother had to walk nearly one kilometer to pick vegetables, bake rice-paper for a porridge-selling store in Phong Nien market. 3 years ago, she got weaker and weaker, nonstop worrying about the following days of her daughters. She said with a choked voice, “I am very worried, I do not know how the two children will be like as I pass away”. The day receiving the amount of VND 20 million is nearly Tet festival, She was really happy. Not only did she receive large sums of money from Ms. Ha, but she also received more than VND 400 million from donors in the cities of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, Hai Phong and expatriates in the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, Korea…
Besides Ms. Ha, Ms. Thuy Phuong (a Vietnamese residing in America, born in ward 5, Tuy Hoa city), sent USD4,500 to help the poor in her homeland. And Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Duong (a Vietnamese residing in Australia) has been sharing with the poor students in the homeland by donating long-term scholarships for fond-of-learning poor students. Among them is Pham Van Dat, the 4th-year student in the University of Petroleum in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. Dat has been helped by Ms. Duong during the past 4 years. He is from Phong Phu village, An Hiep commune (Tuy An district) with the extremely distress circumstance, his mother had a stroke and has been bedridden for 14 years now, his father strives to do farming, being employed to bring up the 3 children. However, the youngest son Pham Van Hoang suffered from malignant tumor from Junior Secondary days, so he had to drop out of school. Not making his father disappointed, Dat tries to learn, in the last senior secondary year, he won the 3rd prize of Biology at provincial level. On the day of receiving the notice of passing the university entrance exam, Dat felt happy and worried. How to realize the dream into university? Knowing his ambition, Phu Yen Newspaper connected with Ms. Duong to help him with conditions for studying at university. Initially, Ms. Duong sent VND 10 million for Dat to buy a laptop to serve his learning; simultaneously, monthly donating VND 1.5 million until Dat graduates from university. For the coming Lunar New Year, she sent VND 2 million for him to buy clothing and prepare for his family’s Tet festival. Each time visiting Phu Yen Newspaper office, Dat movingly shared, “Without your connection, I would not be able to continue my studying. Another golden heart is Ms. Nguyen Tran Thanh Thao (born in ward 3, Tuy Hoa city) , whose parents are settling in the United States, each visit to the homeland, she supports USD 5,000 to help the ethnic minority people in remote areas in the communes of Ea Trol, Song Hinh (Song Hinh district), Krong Pa, Ea Cha Rang (Son Hoa district), Xuan Lanh, Xuan Phuoc (Dong Xuan district). She revealed, “Far from the homeland for many years, while returning, I would like to contribute a small part to help the poor to have more happiness. As going to the difficult places, witnessing the needy and handing over gifts to the poor, I’m very happy…”.
