Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Cao Duc Phat March 13 sent an urgent dispatch to leaders of people’s committees in border provinces asking to tighten cattle smuggling through border gates to prevent food and mouth disease (FM).

The Minister requested authorities in the northern mountainous provinces including Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Son La, Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, Tuyen Quang, Lang Son, Yen Bai, Thanh Hoa and central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh to tightly control cattle illegal transport through border fates for food and mouth prevention.

The Ministry said that the outbreaks of food and mouth disease have lately re-occurred among cattle in the northern mountainous provinces of Bac Kan and Lao Cai as residents there illegally imported waste diseased sows.

In addition, for Lunar New Year, demand of animal consumption has been high; accordingly, transportation and slaughtering have also been increased which is conducive for disease transmission from districts to districts.

To prevent the disease transmission, the Ministry asked local authorities to implement measures against sale and smuggling of cattle via border crossings as well as to issue harsh penalties to violators.
