Voluntary activities have been conducted since the beginning of this month in Ho Chi Minh City and other localities to clear public sites, plant trees, spread the news of job opportunities, and help keep traffic order on the streets.
A voluntary campaign was launched on March 1 by the central committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union to mark the 84th founding anniversary of the organization, which falls on March 26.
In Ho Chi Minh City, over 5,000 volunteers and members of the union and locals took part in the voluntary campaign yesterday by giving vocational guidance to young people as well as cleaning up streets and along canals.
State officials of 24 districts in the southern hub joined hands to plant trees, clean up public places, urge people to keep traffic order and safety, and prevent and fight social evils.
The activities had the participation of city leaders such as Nguyen Van Ranh, head of the department of public relations under the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, and Nguyen Manh Cuong, secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City chapter of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.
After planting trees along the Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal in District 6 and Pham Van Chi Park nearby, Ranh gave trees to families living in the district and encouraged local residents “to take care of the trees as well as spend some 30 minutes a week cleaning up your living environment.”
“It helps your alleys, streets, and residential areas become cleaner and life will be better,” he stressed.
Volunteers from the Ho Chi Minh City branch of utility corporation Vietnam Electricity repaired lighting systems in public places on alleys and streets.
In District 5, they helped connect security cameras with mobile phones of locals so that each person becomes a guard of their area.
Many canals, including Bau Trau in District 6, Tan Thanh Dong – Hoa Phu in Cu Chi District, Ong Hoa in District 2, and Tau Hu – Ben Nghe in District 1 were also cleaned up yesterday.
The central committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union set a target to give vocational guidance to 100,000 young people and students, help 10,000 people get employed, and provide life skills training for at least 30,000 children in March.
