Binh Thuan police on Saturday arrested two senior officials accused of embezzling money meant for training local paramilitary forces.

The arrestees include Vo Van Hoang, vice head of Cho Lau Town Party Unit and Nguyen Van Lai, head of the town’s military unit.

The duo will be arrested for four months for investigation against accusations that they appropriated “dozens of million dong” from the fund for training paramilitary forces, police said.

Hoang was accused of embezzling the money from 2011-2012 when he was head of the town’s military unit. Hoang’s successor, Lai, was accused of embezzling the money in 2013.

On March 7, police announced to launch investigation against three other officials on charges of abuse of power, including Huynh Thai Khang, chairman of Cho Lau People’s Committee, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thuy, former head of financial section and Dam Thi Thanh Truc, accountant.

Thuy is Hoang’s wife.

The three officials were put under home arrest.

According to investigators, Khang instructed Thuy and Truc to embezzle nearly VND200 million (US$9,370) from traffic fines in 2013.

Khang has also been suspended for investigation.
