Son, 1.93m tall, is a former Taekwondo player who won 15 medals at Taekwondo tournaments in Vietnam and Asia. He is now a model.

Nguyen Dang Chuong, head of the Performing Art Agency, had said that Son was not licenced to represent Vietnam at Mister Global 2015 because he did not meet criteria to represent the country as he had not won any national modeling competitions.

The official said that in this case Son would be fined between VND15-30 million ($700-1,500) and his title would not be recognized at home.

Some models like Dieu Linh, Cao Thuy Linh, Huynh Thuy Anh and Tuong Vy have been fined for competing at beauty contests without a licence.

Son explained that in mid-February, he received the invitation from the organizing board of Mister Global 2015 pageant. As it was urgent and the contest was held very shortly before the lunar New Year holiday, Son could not get the permission from the Performing Arts Department in time.
