Viet Nam has attracted more than US$8.5 billion worth of foreign direct investment in the year-to-date, an increase of 8.9 per cent over the same period last year, according to the Foreign Investment Agency.
Of this, nearly $5.09 billion is in 398 new projects, a 5.8 per cent rise year-on-year, and the rest is in 160 existing projects expanded their capital by $3.42 billion, up 14 per cent.
Disbursement of FDI was worth an estimated $4.58 billion, a year-on-year increase of 1.6 per cent.

Fewer children suffer from stunted growth
The rate of stunting in children under five in Viet Nam has fallen to 26.7 per cent, Dr Le Thi Hop, director of the National Institute of Nutrition, said.
This means one in four children under five is stunted, compared to one in three in 2010, she said.
A lack of micronutrients for children remains a major challenge, according to the institute.

Mekong Delta to grow less sugarcane
The area under sugarcane in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta is expected to fall significantly this year due to farmers shifting to other crops.
Pham Hong Van, People’s Committee deputy chairman of Cu Lao Dung District in Soc Trang Province, said since sugarcane fetched very low prices last crop, many farmers have stopped planting it.
The area under sugarcane in the 2013-14 crop in the district is around 7,500ha, 500ha less than last year.
The situation is similar in Hau Giang, Tra Vinh, Kien Giang, and Ca Mau Provinces.

Nation targets rabies eradication by 2020
Improving education, pet vaccination, and awareness of proper treatment of bites by rabid dogs are among the measures the country plans to eradicate rabies by 2020, delegates told a meeting in northern Phu Tho Province on Friday.
The incidence of rabies has been increasing in Viet Nam, especially in the northern mountain provinces, according to the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology.
Rabies continues to be the number one killer among epidemics, killing around 100 people a year, mostly due to poor public awareness and low cat and dog vaccination rates.
