CUU LONG DELTA (VNS) — Eighty nine houses were burned down in a wild blaze yesterday afternoon in Vinh Xuong Commune in Tan Chau Town in the Mekong province of An Giang.

Tran Van Von, chairman of the Vinh Xuong Commune People’s Committee, said 10 people were slightly injured while moving their assets from the fire that broke out at 11.30 am.

Von said a narrow road to the site of the fire delayed the arrival of the four fire engines. About 200 firemen, boder-guards and policemen joined the fight against the fire, stamping it out at 4pm.

Damage caused by the fire is estimated at more than VND30 billion (US$1.43 million). Fire victims have been taken to Vinh Xuong Pre-school for temporary residence.

Vinh Xuong Commune People’s Committee has provided relief of VND1 million to each family involved while the Fatherland Front of An Giang donated from VND3 million to VND5 million to each family. —VNS.
