A fire completely gutted the third floor of Minh Quyen Hostel at 171 High Way No.13 in Ward 26 in Binh Thanh District in Ho Chi Minh City at 4pm on June 13, causing panic among the inmates.
According to initial information, local residents heard a loud crack and then smelt something burning on the third floor of the hostel. Many people inside the hostel ran out to shout for help. Local people and police forces tried to douse the fire but failed.
Tens of firefighters rushed to Binh Thanh District and helped extinguish the fire, but the third floor of the hostel was completely destroyed.
Related agencies are conducting further investigation, but so far the cause of the fire is being attributed to an electric short circuit.
In related news, a huge fire broke out at 11am on June 12 in Tan Chau Town in the Mekong delta province of An Giang, burning down 85 houses. About 78 of these houses were completely gutted to the ground and so far total losses are estimated at around VND30 billion (US$1.44 million).
According to initial investigation, the fire flared at the house of Vo Van Nap, who sold many things from his residence. The flames quickly spread to neighboring houses which were built of flammable material.
More than 200 firefighters and locals were deployed to extinguish the flames, which took several hours. Fortunately, no loss of human life was reported.
Tran Van Von, secretary and chairman of the People’s Committee of Vinh Xuong Commune, said the local government provided accommodation to victims of the fire and supported of VND1-5 million per household, depending on extent of damage.
