A huge fire burnt down 85 houses in Vinh Xuong Commune in Tan Chau Town in the Mekong Delta Province of An Giang on June 12.

The fire flared from a house of a local man named Vo Van Nap at 11.20am and quickly spread to surrounding houses, gutting several houses and causing total damage of VND30 billion (US$1.43 million). Fortunately, no human loss has been reported.

Leaders of Tan Chau Town and Vinh Xuong Commune mobilized more than 200 firefighters to stamp out the fire, which was finally brought under control by 4pm of the same day.

Households losing their homes to the fire have now been sheltered at Vinh Xuong Nursery School. Local authorities and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee in An Giang Province have given each household financial aid of VND2-6 million, depending on extent of damage.
