HA NOI – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and 46 senior officials will come under fresh scrutiny as the National Assembly holds confidence votes for the first time, part of changes announced last year to bring greater accountability to the Government
A list of 47 top officials to face the vote of confidence was approved this morning. It includes those who are elected or approved by the NA and the People’s Council. Those who poll less then 50 per cent will face a no-confidence vote or be asked to resign. The newly-appointed Minister of Finance and Audit Chief, who officially took their positions late last month, are out of the list as they have not been in office for the required minimum amount of time.
NA Chairman Nguyeon Sinh Hung said that all the 47 prescribed officials had submitted reports on their work performance and results during their time in office.
“These are the most important information sources for NA deputies to consider before the vote,” Huung said.
The NA chief said the current situation of social economic development, security and national defence, international relations and justice as the other factors that needed to take into account.
“The situation reflects the results of the country’s governance system in general, as well as those who are undergoing the vote in particular,” Hung said.
Another source of information to be weighed before the vote were the opinions and recommendations from voters nationwide, he added.
“This is a double vote as the voters vote for NA deputies then the deputies vote, as the implementation of their political and judicial powers, for themselves,” said the NA chief.
Head of the NA Office Nguyen Hanh Phuc was quoted by the Government online newspaper as saying that the ballots distributed to the NA deputies will be categorised into groups of high-ranking officials (including President, NA Chairman and Prime Minister), ministers and head of NA committees.
Phuuc said there had been no complaints and denunciation regarding the prescribed positions so far.
The NA will appoint a vote counting board this afternoon and carry out the vote later in the day. The results will be published tomorrow morning. — VNS
