(VOV) – Vietnamese athletes took home 13 gold medals on the first day of the 2013 Southeast Asian Junior Athletics Championships, which opened in Ho Chi Minh City on June 7.
Members of the Vietnamese team took part in all 45 events on the opening day with an outstanding performance by Nguyen Thi Hoai Nhi clearing 1.70m in the high jump, as well as Bui Thi Trang’s 43.31m javelin throw and Nguyen Thi Hang in the U21 women’s 400m hurdles.
Other Vietnamese athletes preparing for the Asian Athletics Championships in China also did well including Bui Thi Nang Bac’s gold and Tran Thi Tham’s silver in the women’s 800m event, and Nguyen Thi Oanh’s gold in the women’s 400m.
This year’s annual championships have attracted 300 athletes and officials from seven Southeast Asian nations including Thailand, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and host, Vietnam.
