The Ministry of Health has ordered the Department of Health in the central province of Khanh Hoa to transfer a 21-month-old boy from Cam Ranh City to the National Children Hospital in Hanoi for treatment, after his bladder was mistakenly removed by doctors while performing bubonocele surgery for inguinal hernia.
The National Children Hospital will invite Professor Nguyen Thanh Liem, the hospital’s former director, to carry out a surgery to amend the surgical blunder on toddler Tran Anh Duc.
On October 23, 2012, Tran Anh Duc was hospitalized in Cam Ranh General Hospital and diagnosed with inguinal hernia, which required surgery.
However, doctors mistakenly removed the boy’s bladder while conducting the surgery. The baby boy was then transferred to the General Hospital in Khanh Hoa Province, where doctors perform an emergency operation on the boy and then put two catheters into the boy to take out urine. They then transferred him to Pediatrics Hospital 2 for further treatment.
After the incident, the provincial Department of Health convened a meeting to discuss disciplinary action against the doctors who committed this serious medical malpractice. As per the decision of the council, the management board of the hospital gave a written warning to the main surgeon, Dr. Pham Van Toan, head of the trauma surgery department.
The Cam Ranh General Hospital has given the boy’s family VND30 million (US$1,440) as support and a saving account of VND230 million ($11,000).
