Localities urged to brace for storm Bebinca

(VOV) – The Central Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Prevention held an urgent meeting on June 22 to discuss measures to cope with the developing typhoon Bebinca, the second tropical storm in the region this year.


Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai asked localities to monitor the storm’s progress and stressed the need to instruct ships in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) island and other coastal localities such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, and Nam Dinh to takes urgent measures to avoid damage from the storm.


Hai told Quang Ninh and Hai Phong to closely monitor tourist cruises and asked northern mountainous provinces to ensure the safety of reservoirs and mineral exploration and residential areas that are vulnerable to flash floods and landslides.


The Director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that the storm is expected to cross Hainan Island and make landfall along the Tonkin Gulf coastline between 3-4 pm on June 22 with category 6 or 7 winds.


Over the next 24 hours, Bebinca will move west-north west at a speed of 15-20km.


On June 23 the eye of the storm will be 110km east-southeast of coastal areas in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong provinces.

The storm will likely change direction in the next 48 hours and follow a west-north west path with a wind speed of around 15 km per hour and weaken into a tropical depression.
