BTO – In the past two years, 593 ethnic households in the villages/communes of the upland, including Me Pu commune (Duc Linh district), Mang To commune (Tanh Linh district), Thuan Hoa, Dong Tien (Ham Thuan Bac district ), Phan Dung (Tuy Phong), have been guided to cultivate new varieties and apply cultivation technologies to 362.7 hectares by many technological staff from Binh Thuan’s provincial Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs. Therefore, the productivity in their rice paddies has gained 50 quintals/hectares. Ethnic people in Dong Tien commune, especially, have grown 45 hectares with three rice crops/year – the yield of 55 quintals/hectare/crop. 245 ethnic households in Dong Tien commune have developed 607 hectares of hybrid corn more with the productivity of 60 quintals/hectare/crop. The whole commune’s food production has achieved 3,000 tons per year, becoming the only upland commune of Binh Thuan province to enable self-sufficient food for years.
Besides, ethnic people in Duc Linh, Tanh Linh and Ham Thuan Bac districts also plan rubber trees. Up to now, the Mounainous Service Center belonging to Binh Thuan’s provincial Committee For Ethnic Minority Affairs has supplied more than 158,558 varieties . The ethnic groups grow 260 ha of rubber trees with the survival rate of over 95%. The ethnic people planting rubber trees have received 15 training courses for planting, caring and getting rubber latex from the committee.
Dong Giang Rubber Station (the mountainous service center) often indicates them how to care and purchases their product in order to limit traders purchasing low price. From 2010 to now, the station has bought more than 886.4 tons of rubber latex worth over VND 12,458 million. Thanks to rubber trees, dozens of households in Dong Giang and La Da communes have become wealthy farmers (their income from VND 20-25 million per month).
There are models of good production and business in the upland communes such as K’Thi Hom in Dong Tien commune, Nguyen Van Meng in La Ngau commune and Chu Van Tam in Lac Tanh townlet (Tanh Linh district), Phan Van Liep in Tan Xuan (Ham Tan), T’San Boi Loc in Hai Ninh (Bac Binh district)
In general, their life still has many difficulties. New science and technology application in production have not been synchronously implemented because of some households’ limited awareness. Their qualifications haven’t been satisfied. Thus, the application of science and technology in the ethnic minority areas need to try for years.
