(VOV) -Around 5,000 volunteers and 150 singers and artists will tour Vietnam in the first ‘Red Journey‘, holding blood donation campaigns in 15 cities and provinces from July 7-28.
They will be divided into two groups, with one group starting from the northern province of Dien Bien and the second from the southern province of Ca Mau, meeting in Hanoi on July 27.
Carrying the message of ‘Connecting Vietnamese Blood,, the volunteers expect to donate 12,000 units of blood and improve public awareness of blood donation and call for people’s support for patients of thalassemia, a blood disorder originating in the Mediterranean region.
People with thalassemia make less hemoglobin than normal, which results in mild or severe anemia. The disease can cause significant complications, including iron overload, bone deformities and cardiovascular illness.
This humanitarian activity is organised by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) under the coordination of the Health Ministry and the National Steering Committee of Voluntary Blood Donation.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Anh Tri, Head of the organising board, said the Red Journey is part of the Summer Red Blood campaign to help reduce the scarcity of blood nationwide this summer and increase the volume of donated blood to 1 million units during 2013.
