HCM City meeting marks Vietnam-Canada ties

(VOV) – A meeting was held in HCM City on July 2 to mark 40 years of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Canada and 146 years of Canada Day (July 1).


At the function, Vice Mayor Hua Ngoc Thuan noted that the long-term, stable and comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Canada has constantly developed during the past 40 years through regular visit exchanges at all levels.


Two-way trade has grown and flourished considerably over the years, reaching more than US$1.6 billion in 2012, a nine fold increase compared to 2001.


During a Hanoi visit in March 2013 by Foreign Minister John R. Baird, both sides agreed to increase cooperation in various areas, primarily in trade, investment, science-technology, education-training.


Thuan acknowledged economic, trade and investment cooperation between HCM City and Canada, saying bilateral trade value hitting US$265 million. Currently, Canada has 50 valid projects in HCM City, capitalised at US$91.5 million.


He confirmed that HCM City wants to boost multifaceted cooperation with Canada and it will create favourable conditions for its businesses to operate efficiently in the city.


Canadian Consul General Audri Mukhopadhyay said the Canada-Vietnam relations are developing well through economic, education and humanitarian exchanges.


He noted that more than 3,000 Vietnamese students are currently studying in Canada, and bilateral education cooperation programmes have been carried out efficiently in HCM City.
