Dinh Viet Thang, deputy head of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, said that the runway upgrade had been expected to be finished on November 20 but was completed early as contractors increased working shifts.
Contractors will finish asphalting the runway by August, installing lights and control equipment in early September. The official reopening day of Phu Bai Airport is scheduled for September 20 after the administration inspected the project progress on Monday.
“The administration will make an official announcement in the next few days so that airlines can arrange flight schedules to Hue City,” Thang said.
After the upgrade is finished, Phu Bai Airport will have three more boarding gates.
When the airport was closed on March 20, tour prices to Hue increased as travel companies had to pay costs for transport from Danang to Hue.
According to the planning approved by the Government, Phu Bai Airport will meet the 4E standard of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and can receive 20 aircrafts and five million passengers per year in 2020.
